Getting Back On the Treadmill

Here we are in the first throws of the NEW YEAR, and the time-honored-worn tradition of NEW YEAR’s RESOLUTIONS couldn’t come at a better time for me. Annually, a series of events (some accidental, but mostly our own choices) come along during each year’s final quarter that knock me firmly off the writing horse. It’s good that I get to “start over” with a new list of commitments.

(Maybe I’m not that unusual about being knocked off routine at the end of the year – “The Holidays” probably do that to most people. We just have a birthday thrown in there, and inevitably enough undesirable things added into the mix that my time is not my own. Thankfully, we didn’t have another Christmas week car accident this year. But I digress…)

It’s not easy to restart. They say you never forget how to ride a bicycle, but in my experience, it’s harder to ride if you’re rusty. It takes me a while to get back into a rhythm after “taking a break” – regardless of why the break happened.

The starting over isn’t good for my writing. It has many of the same drawbacks as yo-yo dieting – or cramming for tests: you may force your way into meeting a particular goal, but you enforce the complementary habit of stopping (and then having to start over again.)

It’s good to be able to run write like the wind when needed, but it’s better to develop a consistent habit of writing daily – I find that the more consecutive days I write, the more productive each writing hour becomes. It takes a while to put my internal editor back in its place.

Slow and steady wins the race.

Just saying…

The clock is running down as humanity struggles to find a new home; they’ve opened a gate into the unknown, but need evidence that their new world is on the other side before they go through.
