Some thoughts while I’m in the middle of having my slab leak repaired…
I’ve said before that I’m a generally luckier than usual guy – even when things go wrong, or I make mistakes, they mysteriously wind up improving my position in the long run. Don’t get me wrong – I’d rather not have these things happen; as gratifying as the end result of my serendipity might be, the stress, turmoil, and angst that accompany it I’d just as soon do without.
It’s funny – I value seat-of-your-pants innovation, but I understand the value of planning rather than just “letting things happen.” Each has its place – let’s face it, there are things that happen that you just can’t plan for (any battle plan becomes useless once the enemy takes his turn.)
Who is the enemy, anyway? As things happen to me, I often ask myself if GOD is trying to tell me something. Do I really think GOD is at the heart of my ill fortune? Not really. I don’t believe that God decides to do things to us (in general, that is; I know there are instances where He’s taken action regarding a person or people, but I don’t think I’m significant enough to be on his radar.
What I do believe is that God put us here, in an environment with very specific rules and laws, and it’s up to us to figure it all out. There will be good things and bad things that happen, and we have to decide what we’re going to do about it (because we have FREE WILL.) I do believe everything in life is a test, and even the smallest event (good or bad) is an opportunity to prove what kind of a person you are.
Will you curl up in a ball and give up? Will you lord over other people because of your good fortune, or have empathy? Will you covet the lives of others or see the value in your own? Will you do the right thing, or take the easy way out? Be kind or cruel?
Final exams are coming. Be ready! Study up!
This week’s Smashwords coupon is for “Behind the 8-Ball”:
The clock is running down as humanity struggles to find a new home; they’ve opened a gate into the unknown, but need evidence that their new world is on the other side before they go through. Moses can provide that proof, but how could anyone besides his wife believe him? Sometimes, you have to take a leap of faith.
“Behind the 8-Ball” came from an image in my mind of a body being carried by group of suited astronauts on a moonscape, within sight of a green/blue planet. Then I worked backwards – I had to figure out why he was there, and decided he was an “explorer” sent through a wormhole to find a new world. But how would he send the all-clear back to humanity? I used my very rudimentary understanding of entanglement to create an unusual and unlikely method.

Looks like Detective Jimmy Delaney is going to stay an Indie series, so next up for publication will be #5: “Killing Them Softly.” Release date will be September 23rd, so I’ll get things ready for the preorder campaign shortly.
