Creativity / goals / writing

Meandering Monday about a Hole in My Soul

As I remain adrift in our home repairs and unable to get back to seriously writing (this blog is just not the same thing as the creative activity of writing fiction) I realize more and more how I depend on my writing to keep me grounded in reality.

That may seem like an odd thing, if you’ve read my stories (PLEASE DO – it’s why they’re out there…); there is very little REALITY in what I write (except maybe the people who find themselves in my stories) – it is SPECULATIVE FICTION, after all. But with it I get the opportunity to come out of myself for a bit (probably the same reason I used to act) and explore feelings and ways of thinking that I don’t normally consider.

We all need some sort of release – some way to step back from our own reality for a bit, regroup, and come back to it from a different direction. Sometimes when I return, I find myself on the opposite side of what seemed an insurmountable roadblock. It isn’t always the best thing to just stand there staring at a wall; if you want to get past it, you need to go other places.

There’s also the normalcy (for me) of having regular tasks to perform, goals to achieve and milestones to reach. With that all at a standstill, I feel…rudderless (that feeling was a big part of WHY I decided to start writing in the first place.) I need the creative outlet AND the sense of purpose that a regular schedule of writing gives me. I am definitely missing it; may I return to it soon.

Just saying…

Collection1CoverBThis week’s Smashwords coupon is for Things I Could Get OUT OF MY MIND. This was my first short story collection, and contains the following:

“Passed Life”  (Sometimes it’s better to leave the past alone… )

“B.I.T.” (What are we willing to give up to be cured?)

“Through Her Eyes” (They say that we’re blinded by love, but sometimes it’s the only thing that can light the darkness.)

“Business is Business” (An honest craftsman enters into a business relationship with a voluptuous gold-digger.)

“A Dish Best Served” (If you can’t say something nice…)

“Quiet!” (It’s been 40 years since men last visited the moon. Since then it feels like we’ve abandoned manned space exploration. What if that’s not all we abandoned?)

Use coupon code KY65W to get 80% off the cover price at Smashwords (that’s only a dollar – such a deal!) – it’s good until October 1st. Here’s the link:
