Meandering Monday about …me?

I’m a walking contradiction, partly truth, and partly fiction. – Kris Kristofferson

We’re all that way, aren’t we (no, I don’t mean all the dark, depressingly negative things in that song of his – just that one line.) Part of the reason it’s so difficult (and just plain insulting) to try to put labels on people is that few, if any of us are so one-dimensional that the label fits consistently.

I’m an introvert. I have stood in front of rooms of people and announced this. I’ve acted on stage in front of hundreds, and have carried that stage whisper around with me everywhere, so my wife insists that I must want people to notice me. Part of me does, part of me doesn’t. I like karaoke (but not drunken karaoke – I have standards); just because I sing while I’m grocery shopping doesn’t mean I’m an exhibitionist, does it?

It could be for the same reason that I crawled around on the pipes above the stage in my theatre days – to try to shake off my fear of falling (hey – it almost worked.)

I seem to be pretty good at my job – just about any job I’ve had, but for a while now I haven’t felt confident, and often feel incompetent. I was thinking that this was because I’m getting older and slower, but my wife told me, “No, Bill, you’ve blustered your way around for as long as I’ve known you, but you’ve always been that way (I think she means the insecure part, but who knows – and I’m insecure enough to think otherwise.) How can I be insecure and confident at the same time? But I am.

I don’t think I’m that unusual – or maybe I am, but in a common way. We’re all unique, except those of us who are trying to be unique the same way as everyone else. Don’t do that. We spend our lives trying to figure out who we are, and it would be a shame to throw that away to be just like someone else instead, wouldn’t it?

I’ll be me, and you be you and let’s all make the best of what time we have together.

Just saying…

BaastardsRevengeCover“Baastards’ Revenge” – the fourth story of my Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire series – is prepped and ready to go.

Champion of the Empire Hercules Tom thinks this is a mere diplomatic mission to Baast; little does he know what the Baastards have in store for him. But don’t worry – this cat has proven time and again that he has more than the usual nine lives.

The release date is July 28th (that’s 4 days from now), but it’s available for preorder at a reduced price now in the usual places, including, but not limited to:

CatsOfWar_I_CoverSince the preorder campaign has begun for “Baastards’ Revenge”, NOW would be a good time to read the first three Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire stories, all conveniently collected in Cats of War I:

“Purr Mission” – Major Tom’s dander is up. His cub is dying of the Morient Virus, and he knows their sworn enemies are responsible (the Baastards!), but bureaucats order him not to go to their planet to recover the antidote. Well, it’s easier to beg forgiveness than to ask Purr-mission.

“Nipped in the Butt” – More intrigue as a familiar hallucinogen finds its way into Ramses society. Are their long-time adversaries behind it? Time for Major Tom to save the Empire again…

“Cat and Mouse” – Major Tom has plans for his leave time: this cat is finally going to get some much needed R&R with his mates. But recent additions to the household (including his Admiral father-in-law and an uppity mouse chef), as well as an unexpected visit from yet another enemy puts his whiskers in a twist.

I’m offering a Smashwords coupon to cut the price to just 99-cents for the collection (such a deal!) Here’s the link on Smashwords:
