My wife has an interesting theory regarding our run of bad luck. It all has to do with water. That’s right – water. Let’s go backwards in time as we explore this idea…
We just had to have a repairman in to deal with a leak from our dishwasher. Last year we had the “minor” drain-back-up that made it necessary to replace a portion of the new flooring that we put in after the Great Slab Leak of 2016.
Then there’s our last three car accidents – rear-ended in December of 2013 (in the rain), rear-ended in March of 2013 (in the RAIN), broadsided by an out-of-control pickup Christmas of 2012 (on ice and snow, which – YES – is still WATER.)
I could continue itemizing, but I don’t want to totally drain the subject. It almost feels like being Alvin Maker, with water always trying to find a way to finish us.
I don’t understand what water has against us. Is it because I’ve been ignoring it for a while? I used to spend a lot of time in and under water, relaxing on the bottom of the pool (I knew it was time to surface when I’d get SO relaxed that I would catch myself starting to breathe.) But it’s been almost thirty years since I last really spent time in the water. Maybe it’s holding a grudge about being neglected – (Is water female? They say there’s no fury like a woman scorned… And they used to name hurricanes after women until the forces of the easily-offended got their hands on the process…)
We’re lucky we don’t live in a flood plain. I guess this puts the kibosh on my dreams of vacationing on the beach, or taking a cruise, or living on the coast. But, hey! We could go to Mars; there’s not much water there. Just saying…
My next publication will be another consolidated collection – The Next ‘Three Things I Could Get OUT OF MY MIND.’ (That’s a total of 18 stories from my 4th, 5th, and 6th ‘OUT OF MY MIND’ collections, including some personal favorites, such as “My Brother’s Keeper”, “Cannabis alienus ‘alien dope’”, “The Red Barrens”, “Dempsey’s Debut”, and “The Wolves Will Come.”)
From the blurb for “My Brother’s Keeper”:
What would you be willing to do to save a soul from oblivion? Abduction? Possession? Murder?
A space traveler lands on a primitive planet, and contends with the backwards philosophy of some brown-robed brethren as he tries to rescue his own brother’s spirit.
The release date is February 23rd, and it’s now available for preorder for a SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL PRICE of 99-cents (that’s 18 stories at LESS THAN 6-CENTS PER STORY – Such a deal!) at several online retailers, including, but not limited to:
