Fix-it-up Friday: Or Is It Just Falling Apart Friday?

I remember in The Mote in God’s Eye, when the little watchmakers are making a mess of things by constantly “fixing” them – the mechanical variation of what happens when a piece of software is altered to “improve” it (or fix it) and (especially if the fixers are not the original creators) the resulting software is known affectionately as spaghetti code (affectionately, because we can either choose to laugh or cry.) It’s never the same or as good as the original version, and accelerates toward obsolescence.

You buy a house and are almost immediately enslaved into a seemingly unending series of maintenance or repair tasks, unless you’re willing to just allow your nest to become fouled and get another.

So much of our lives seem to be this way. We find ourselves standing on the shoulders of giants (at least giants in the aspect that we THINK that they KNEW what they were doing when they created what we’re trying to use or repair – but how do we know they were any more enlightened than we are (I suspect the only advantage they really have over us is that they at least KNEW WHAT THEY WERE THINKING when they we recreating all this, but EVEN THAT may be WISHFUL THINKING on our part.)

Life may just be a series of (hopefully) happy accidents that – with some luck – keep us moving forward. Ultimately, the universe tends toward entropy, and the best thing you can hope for is to find yourself a decent repairman.

Just saying…
