Goals from last week: 3 blog posts. Stories cycled to market as soon as markets were available. My scheduled release of “There’s No Present Like the Time” went off – on schedule. Need to start planning for my next release (August 17th); it will probably be another short story.
I wrote 1166 words while rewriting of “Interview with the Blue Neon God“, and I’m working through my final revision now before I resend it to the publisher; then it’ll be crossed fingers for a little while. Once I finish, I need to step it up on the remaining nine short stories I’m supposed to produce this year.
My muse is not being particularly helpful right now (much like the caption on my WRITER’S BLOCK T-shirt, “When your imaginary friends refuse to talk to you.”) Maybe she’s on summer vacation right now, but I’m quite nervous about when she’ll make an appearance. I shouldn’t be – I’ve written before about how easy it is to find ideas, and how many different places they can be hiding. My trepidation comes from being out of practice. The last original story I finished was “Date Night”, which I started writing in September of 2017; THAT’S ALMOST A YEAR since I came up with a new fiction idea and fleshed it out on paper. Since then I’ve been working on my Swordsmaster revisions and the “Interview with the Blue Neon God” rewrite. These are still creative endeavors, but a different animal than starting a story from scratch.
I plan to move on next to Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire #6. I don’t know what the story will be yet – first, I need to read the series’ five stories to get back into Major Tom’s universe (it’s been almost a year since I finished writing “Imperial Purrogative”; I don’t remember whether Herc Tom is still a major.) That’s even more delay, but it can’t be helped. It’s familiar territory, and it should be easier to get my writing juices flowing than picking a title out of a hat.
I haven’t literally done that before, but close enough – I’ve flipped a magazine open, closed my eyes and picked out a handful of words to assemble into a starting line. Maybe a song lyric will trigger something. If all else fails, I can find that list of ideas I set aside four years ago when I realized that ideas are always there when I need them. Of course, I won’t have a clue what the original intent of those ideas was, only how they strike me now, but that will be enough to start.
Confidence grows with practice, though, and I’m sure it will return once I have two or three new short stories under my belt. Of course, then I’ll have lost all faith in my ability to finish Swordsmaster. Life would be nothing without challenges.
I am participating in “Smashwords’ Summer/Winter Sale.” All my story collections (including Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire and Detective Jimmy Delaney) are available with a 50%-off coupon on the Smashwords site. You can find them all here: https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/NoTimeToThink
