Writing Wednesday: A Short-Fiction Frame of Mind

Last week’s goals: 3 blog posts done. Stories cycled to market as soon as markets were available (nothing to do there, really – only a couple in the rotation.) Comments on others blogs minimal, but adequate.

Goddesses, Sleep with the Snowmen, and Other Fantasies is available for preorder ahead of its November 30th release date. It’s a collection, so there’s also a paperback (to be released on the 30th), and I received the proof copy yesterday for review (one of the things that has changed since Kindle Direct Publishing absorbed Createspace is that they superimposed a translucent grey ribbon over the cover that says “Not for Resale”; it’s disappointing, because this will be the only copy I will buy of my own book – hey, I’m cheap.) Createspace proofs just had a page that said PROOF, without defacing the cover.

I wrote only 477 words of fiction last week in three days (first revision of Herc Tom #7, which is still unnamed.) I can credit a little of the failure to THE HOLIDAYS, but it’s still mostly just me not applying myself like I should.

I miss the days of just writing stand-alone short fiction.

In my normal methodology, I could dash out a rough draft and revise it. I would then let it lie for two weeks while I worked on something else, and when I returned to it I could easily pick it up (it was easy to remember because it was SHORT), then do one final cleanup and it was DONE – out of m mind, and out to market.

Series and novels ain’t that simple.

I started Herc Tom #6 & #7 at the end of July, and I had every reason to believe I’d be done with them by now. Unfortunately, the longer the series gets (over 50,000 words before these two join the ranks), the more elements there are to keep track of, and the harder it is to remain consistent. I’m working on the first revision of #7 now, then it will be back to #6 (“Cats Out of the Bag”) for its final revision. With luck, it will be done by the end of this month, and #7 by mid-December. Neither one will be making the rounds of markets; being stories in a series, they’ll go direct to ePubication (releases will be January 4th and February 8th.)

Once I’m done with them, I will return to Swordsmaster (my first novel) for what I hope will be the final, concerted push to a June 2019 release. (I just realized that once the two current Herc Tom stories are done, that series will be close to 80,000 words – just shy of the 84,000 word that Swordsmaster already has waiting for me.) I had really thought I would already be working on the novel by now, and it will take me a while to get back into it (like I said, 84,000 words to refamiliarize myself with that have been in my “sock drawer” since July.) The longer I’m away, the more I forget.

Short fiction really was easier to deal with, but despite the hard, tedious work I know I have coming, I love Swordsmaster and I’m anxious to get back to it. Just saying…
