Last week’s status:
Three blog posts as per usual. Finally found an open market for “Date Night”; I submitted, but this means there’s a good chance it won’t be back before my next ePublication release date.
My blog commenting was good (that means more than the required three comments on the blogs of others. My – I feel like the life of the party…not.)
My March 12th release will be “Reining Cats and Dogs” (Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire #7) and it’s finally ready for preorders (see below.)
FIFTY-SEVEN WORDS – that’s all I managed to log last week while I was lining up Swordsmaster’s event calendar (FIFTY-SEVEN WORDS looks like so much more than 57 words, doesn’t it?) What to do about my invisible production – that’s what I’ll be talking about below the divide…
When I set my 3,000-words-per-week goal, it was to help drive my production of short fiction – a way of measuring (and assuring) that I was WRITING. I never consistently made that goal (my best years averaged two-thirds of that), but I made it often enough to know it was possible. And since my short stories seldom needed much in the way of research (and also little rewriting and revision, as well as consistency checking), it was easy to devote all my “writing time” to… WRITING, and pile up the words.
A novel is something else.
As of this writing, there are over one hundred and twenty named characters in Swordsmaster, and just making sure that I don’t misspell or confuse the character names is a task in itself. The same with place names.
The more detail I try to throw in, the more research I need to do to make sure the details make sense.
This will be difficult after seven years of depending on my word output to measure my progress, but I’m going to have to stop worrying about the words-per-week – there’s no accurate way to measure or give any sort of equivalence to what I’m doing right now.
Maybe it’s just as well. I can stop fretting about quantity and enjoy improving the quality. And maybe even ENJOY adding color, instead of bemoaning the time it takes away from “being productive.” Just saying…
Up next for publication is another Herc Tom story – “Reining Cats and Dogs.”
Empress Isabella continues to increase her hold on power with the help of her Slobberer allies. It’s up to our Champion of the Empire (and his friends) to do something about it.
“Reining Cats and Dogs” is a speculative fiction novelette, and is the seventh of the “Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire” stories, following “Purr Mission”, “Nipped in the Butt”, “Cat and Mouse”, “Baastards’ Revenge”, “Imperial Purrogative”, and “Cats Out of the Bag.” The release date is March 1, but it’s available at a promotional preorder price at several online retailers, including (but not limited to):
