Goals update: Last week I made both three blog posts and three comments on the blogs of others.
“Schizo the Magnificent” has returned from market, so I have a couple of days to send it out again. My next release date (not counting Swordsmaster) will be October 25th, and probably a collection, since I don’t have any individual stories to ePub (“Schizo is a flash fiction, and I’m not doing individual flash releases anymore.)
Last week I put in some time each day on Swordsmaster revisions, and logged 2,019 words of fiction. I’ve begun the LAST revision of Swordsmaster, which is now over 99,800 words.
I hate thieves.
Way back when I first started ePublishing, I used to just search on my name – it was fun to see William Mangieri show up in the results (although it took a while to have ME show up above the William Mangieri who’s involved with the CDC and germ warfare. After a while I set up a Google Alert on my name. Every once in a while I get an email with links to where my name shows up – maybe Smashwords, or Amazon, or Kobo, or WordPress. After a while I stopped paying attention.
Yesterday I got a Google Alert email and checked the links – just for fun, but it wasn’t very. I discovered a site that seems to have ALL my books. They aren’t a legit distributor, and they’re actually trying to sell them all at a higher price than I am, so I suspect they aren’t affecting my sales… much. But it’s the principle – they are trying to profit (and probably succeeding) from MY WORK. And when they do overcharge for it, I don’t get a penny.
As little money as I make from my writing, every little bit is huge. But let’s face it – even if I was independently wealthy, it would still matter to me. You just don’t take what doesn’t belong to you.
What’s probably worse is I took a look at some more of my alerts, and there’s at least one site that seems to be GIVING MY STORIES AWAY. Yes, FREE would undercut any sales I could have had, and while they’ve been stealing sales from me, I’m sure they’re also making a profit off my work from a subscription fee, or online advertising, or who knows whatever scheme.
So, just as a reminder –
The only places I sell my work (and am justly given a “piece of the action” are Amazon, Smashwords, and any of the affilisates that Smashwords distributes to – like Kobo, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Flipkart, etc…
