Meandering Monday about Veteran’s Day

Happy Veteran’s Day. For all you out there who have served or are still on active duty – THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

Some people get confused about this day (if they notice it at all – it’s a government and bank holiday, but by and large, most people are still working.) It isn’t like Memorial Day, when we remember those who died in service to our country (although that one confuses people differently – since it is a truly NATIONAL holiday and more people are off work, there’s a lot more opportunity to forget the real purpose of the day, instead thinking it’s something about time at the lake, barbecues, and big store sales.)

I never served myself. I had a respect for and an interest in the military, but this was more related to history than a desire to join up. I graduated high school in ’75, after the Vietnam War and the draft was over (I do remember watching the newspaper for the draft lottery numbers when that was still going on, more as a curiosity than anything that would impact me for a couple of years; I didn’t remember it being televised until I saw it in an episode of This Is Us.)

Even though there was a draft, there were people who volunteered in that war, and I may be wrong, but I don’t think we’ve had an active draft since. Our current military is all volunteer, and I think it says a lot about our country that we have so many people willing to take it on themselves to defend it. But it says even more about those people who are willing to risk their lives to protect what we have here at home.

Take some time today to thank those who have served. Just saying…

Fate is neither something to run away from, nor something to run towards.
