Last Week’s Goals
All my blog posts went out on schedule, and all of my available stories are out to market as they should be.
My next scheduled release is “Hacked Off” (Detective Jimmy Delaney #7) on June 25th. The story is now available for PREORDER at a reduced price, of FOR FREE as a Smashwords Presale. You can find the links and information on My Current Book Promotions page.
I’ve done nothing new in my marketing other than putting “Hacked Off” on Presale. I posted the usual in Indie’s Unlimited Thrifty Thursdays & Kindle Unlimited Fridays. I did watch a series of videos in Ray Brehm’s Book Profit School virtual summit. It seemed mostly applicable to non-fiction authors, but there were still some useful tidbits.
Remember – if you click on one of my Amazon links and then purchase ANYTHING on the site, I might get a small commission AT NO COST TO YOU, so consider using one of my links the next time you plan a purchase (so think of me when you buy that television…)
Brandon Sanderson’s Words of Radiance was a great follow-up to The Way of Kings. As always, impressive in his world-building, the level of detail, and the depth of characters. I’m now reading Brightly Burning by Mercedes Lackey.
Last week I wrote only 2,680 words of fiction. This was on only four days (yes, I let LIFE get the better of me again.) All of this was on Detective Jimmy Delaney #8 (working title “Possession”), which is nearing 8,000 words. It feels like it’s going to be twice that long before it’s done.
It’s Déja Vu All Over Again
Detective Jimmy Delaney #8 (“Possession”) is coming in spurts, just like “Hacked Off” did. I stare at the keyboard for a while and can’t seem to think of what to write next. I finally give up and walk away until I think of a scene that ought to be somewhere in the story. I’ll wind up with some disjointed scenes, and then I’ll just have to figure out how to bridge the gaps.
Each time I sit back down, I repeat the process – try to force the scene that I think SHOULD come NEXT, stare at the blank page until I surrender and just write whatever comes to mind, no matter how disconnected it is from what I’ve already written. I waste a lot of time this way – part of the reason that I missed my quota last week. It’s not that I didn’t TRY to write on those three empty days – I was simply unproductive, blocked by my foolish insistence on bucking how the story WANTS to be written.
It’s not like this is a new revelation – you may remember that I had to deal with the same situation with “Hacked Off”, and wrote much of it out of sequence (and some of it even backwards.) I’d already worked all this out before, but here I am, repeating myself.
It should be obvious that I don’t take instruction very well – even from myself. Part of the reason this old dog is often relearning a not-so-new trick that you’d think I’d learned before (since I went to the effort of writing about it.) And so I sit down and try once again to write in sequence, knowing that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Forming habits takes time, but for some people it takes longer than others. I will learn someday, but don’t be surprised if today is not that day. Just saying…
