Meandering Monday about Censorship, Consensus, Conscience, and Coercion

You don’t prove you’re right by silencing the opposition. This has  been tried throughout history, and does nothing but slow down progress. Sure, the people resisting truth to preserve their short-term self-interest may retain power for a little bit longer, but eventually it has to be admitted that Galileo was right, and that the Earth travels around the Sun.

“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.”    – Arthur Schopenhauer, Philosopher

Silencing of opposition has been prevalent on several topics in the modern day. Anthropogenic (that means man-made) Climate Change has been pushed more by silencing, ostracizing, and defunding those who disagree with the “consensus” of the “settled science” (true science is never SETTLED by CONSENSUS) than by any actual proof.

It used to be that we could count on the MEDIA to MEDIATE debate – to keep the discussion honest, the facts laid out. That has ended with agenda-driven journalism, where opinions now masquerade as facts.

Antifa (which is supposedly anti-fascist) uses fascist violence to silence debate. Other organizations and movements operate through more subtle means of intimidation – cross them and you will lose any number of things, including your memberships, your livelihood, business, or friends. And it’s no longer sufficient to remain silent when you disagree – you MUST kneel, kiss the ring, and repeat the mantra.

Then we have Big Tech’s “Anti-Misinformation” Campaigns (much the same misunderstanding of what ANTI is supposed to mean, they actually support the promotion of APPROVED MISINFORMATION.) Biased Fact Checkers who told us to pay no attention to anyone who said the Wuhan Virus came from the Wuhan lab. Or banned anyone who said that Hydroxychloroquine was safe and helpful in the early treatment of Covid. Buried any evidence of the Biden Clan’s corruption. Expressing that there was any fraud, illegality, or even peculiarities in the 2020 election is verboten. Claiming any of these things was sufficient to get people banned from the public square – much like conservative speakers have been banned from university campuses by either being shouted down, or by threats of (or actual) violence. Many of these opinions have since been proven true, and others will take some time yet, although they have yet to be DISproven.

When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is to co-operate with evil, and in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control.  – Theodore Dalrymple

That last quote is a little heady, but it’s worth working through (probity = moral integrity.)

Don’t let people keep you from saying things that you know are true, and don’t let absolute falsehoods stand. Only through a healthy and open debate can we work together to solve our problems.

Just saying…
