Writing Wednesday: Doing That Marketing Thing

Last Week’s Goals

All my blog posts went out on time. Two stories returned from market and cycled back out.

I note that I am failing on one of my goals for this year: I was supposed to review and revamp my blurbs and keywords by the end of June – this has not happened. We’ll see if I get around to it before the end of the year…

I made my weekly fiction quota last week, producing 3,698 words of fiction. I wrote on seven days, but missed my daily quota on three of them. This was on the rough draft of Detective Jimmy Delaney #9 (“Too Much of a Good Thing”), which is currently over 17,000 words; still a novelette, but I’m not done yet.

I finally finished reading that Amazon #1 seller that I mentioned a couple of week’s ago. I will not be naming the book or the author, but what I learned is that there’s more to becoming a #1 seller than writing well. The book has been online for a few years, and still is badly in need of line editing. I learned after I started reading that the book is Young Adult, so my ability to judge what’s acceptable in that genre is limited (with the exception that poor line editing is still poor line editing.) The plot wasn’t very well constructed, and I would have hoped for something more artful, even in a YA novel. Not everyone can be JK Rowling, but just because their young doesn’t mean they don’t deserve more than words slapped on the page.

What lessons do I take from this?

I am a better writer than some people who have succeeded on Amazon

BUT

Marketing is very important

And so the rest of today’s post will be – you guessed it:

MARKETING & PROMOTION

First of all – “Possession” (Detective Jimmy Delaney #8) is ready for its September 3rd release (just two more days!)

PossessionGreenCoverJimmy’s relationship with Diana has never been better, but then she gets control of the Southside Endowment. Jimmy starts to feel like just another possession, until a seeming ghost from the past gives him something to investigate. Possession may be nine-tenths of the law, but exactly what kind of possession are we talking about here?

“Possession” is a soft-boiled detective novella with some sci-fi and fantasy elements, sort of a The Rockford Files meets The Avengers (the old BBC series, not the superheroes.) It’s the eighth story in the Detective Jimmy Delaney series.

The novella is available now, until the September 3rd release date, as a FREE SMASHWORDS PRESALE! That means that, at no cost to you, you can download the book RIGHT NOW and read it for FREE.

“Possession” is also available for preorder until September 3rd at a special promotional price at several online retailers, including – but not limited to:

Smashwords:  https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1100460?ref=NoTimeToThink
Amazon:  https://amzn.to/3y4NrYo
Barnes & Noble:  https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/possession-william-mangieri/1140041598?ean=2940162204534
(Just a reminder – if you haven’t read any Detective Jimmy Delaney stories, the first one (“In a Flash”) is FREE! at each of those sites.)
As always, ratings and reviews are appreciated – thanx!

In the run-up to the release day for “Possession,” I made a few attempts to get some free marketing. The only ones that came through for me were:

BestBookMonkey:  https://bestbookmonkey.com/books/possession/

DiscountBookman:  https://discountbookman.com/?p=468871

Simily.co is a new platform for selling short stories. I discovered them through a posting on LinkedIn. The principle seems to be similar to Kindle Select / Kindle Unlimited, where members (current fee is either free or a reduced amount as they start up) and authors get a small payment for each reader who looks at their story. There are two main differences between this and what Amazon does:

  1. This is only short fiction
  2. The author’s story doesn’t have to be exclusive (with Amazon’s scheme, you have to be exclusive)

The author retains all rights to their works, and can withdraw at any time. So far, I don’t see a downside, so I’m giving it QuietCoverTheBodyCovera try with a couple of my stories and see what kind of pennies I pull in. You can check my stories out here:

This also seems to be a link to “me” on the site:

I’d be glad to hear your thoughts and impressions of both my stories and the site in the comments here – thanx!
