We only have a couple of days left in 2021. As I proselytize every year, it’s time for each of us to look at how our plans went for the year, and to plot out the commitments to ourselves for 2022 (AND publish them for others to see, because it’s easier to break promises to ourselves when no one else knows about them.) I look forward to see what you come up with next week.
Last Week’s Goals
Blog entries were posted on schedule. All my available works are still out to market.
I wrote on five days but made my daily quota on three of them. I failed to make my weekly quota, with only 2,427 words of fiction, mostly on the draft of Swordsmaster #3 (currently 8,638 words), and a little on a piece of fiction that became this Meandering Monday’s post.
On the MARKETING & PROMOTION Front
I’m participating in Smashwords’ End of Year sale – all my collections and Swordsmaster are 50% off through January 1st. You can find the links to all of them on MY CURRENT BOOK PROMOTIONS page.
As you’re finishing up the last of your HOLIDAY SEASON SHOPPING, please consider buying one of my stories or collections as a gift for a friend (or yourself.)
And if you want to help me make a go of this writing gig WITHOUT IT COSTING YOU A PENNY, I’m in the Amazon Affiliates program; any time you click one of the links I provide here to my books on Amazon (<– LIKE THIS ONE), and then make a purchase of something like, say, a TV, I get a small percentage of Amazon’s profit. So PLEASE consider using one of my links to get to Amazon before you make that next purchase. Thanx!
When Right-Brain and Left-Brain Butt Heads
All writers have to learn how to referee a wrestling match between the halves of their brain so they can write. The right side is generally viewed as the artistic, creative side, while the left is the logical, analytical side.
When I’m in the process of writing (not planning, but actually writing), my right side (the MUSE) spools out the story, while the left side (my INTERNAL EDITOR, which I choose to call my INFERNAL EDITOR™) looks over my shoulder and constantly tries to take control of the situation.
“You can’t start writing yet – you don’t know where this is going.”
“No – don’t write that. It sounds stupid.”
“If that’s going to happen, then you need to fix the last five chapters.”
I’m a PANTSER, which should mean that I am a predominantly right-brained writer. You might think that means that I do all of my struggling against the INFERNAL EDITOR™ (I believe that struggle causes the majority of my WRITER’S BLOCK), but that isn’t always the case. When it’s my MUSE’s turn to step back and let the INFERNAL EDITOR™ do his job
“This isn’t fun at all.”
“Do you REALLY want to be doing this revising?”
“I just had this neat idea for a story! We can come back to this later – let’s write it now.”
I’m sure PLOTTERS go through similar struggles. Just because they’re left-brained doesn’t mean that they stay in control of the wrestling match.
The MUSE and the INFERNAL EDITOR™ each have their place(s) in the process, and you really can’t finish a project without using both of them. It’s up to the writer to keep them from butting heads so each can do their job. Otherwise the story is never finished.
