Last Week’s Goals
My blog entries were posted on schedule. I sent another piece back to market within a day of its return.
I wrote on seven days, and made my daily quota on five of them. I made my weekly 3,500 word quota with 3,560 words of fiction. The draft of Swordsmaster #3 has almost reached 22,000 words.
My first release of this year is on January 21st, just TWO days from today. “Lasting Impression” is a speculative fiction short story about an encounter that leads a biology major into the less mainstream field of cryptozoology. The story is available now as a preorder at several online retailers (you can find the links on MY CURRENT BOOK PROMOTIONS PAGE), or if you would like to read it before its release – AND FOR FREE – it’s available as a Smashwords presale at this link:
As always, honest ratings and reviews are greatly appreciated. Thanx!
Swordsmaster Series in the Hands of a Pantser
I wrote Swordsmaster as a standalone novel, but I had left it a little open-ended, and decided to continue Sandrik’s story with a second book. (As an aside, this means that the original will be re-titled because just throwing book numbers in the title feels unprofessional. Most likely the original will be called Swordsmaster: Awakening.)
I finished the rough draft of the second book (Swordsmaster: Deceit) almost a year ago. I set it aside so I could work on some short fiction and return to the novel later with fresh eyes.
When I did return to it, I first read the original Swordsmaster to make sure that the second book felt like a natural extension. My intention was to next read the draft of Swordsmaster: Deceit and then begin revising it. However, after I read the draft, I had to stop working on the second book because I realized that it was leading into a Swordsmaster #3. I needed to know what was going to happen in that next book so I could lay the groundwork in the second one.
So I started writing the draft of the third book, because – in my own version of the PANTSER process, I have to write the book so I’ll know what is going to happen in it. So far I’m 22,000 words into what will be a 100,000 word novel. Most of what is happening on those pages is not plot critical – it has more to do with establishing characters and motive so that the characters will then finally let me know where the story is going.
If I was a PLOTTER, I could just make a quick outline and know where the third book is going, and therefore get back to the second book much sooner. That may be how THEY work (I think it is), but it’s not what works for me. If I tried it, you might open the cover of my novel and see nothing but an outline. I need to work the way I do to flesh things out.
This probably sounds a bit silly to most of you – even some of you fellow PANTSERS (because everyone’s writing process is different, and just because you’re a PANTSER that doesn’t mean that what I do will make any sense to you – ESPECIALLY since it makes no sense to me much of the time.)
As I’ve said before, I YAM WHAT I YAM.
I’d be curious to know what kind of sense this stuff makes to you, and how similar or different it is from the way you work. That’s why there’s a comment section. Just saying…
