Writing Wednesday: What Is a Series, Really?

Last Week’s Goals

My blog posts continued on schedule.

Another two pieces came back from market and were turned around and resubmitted to other publications.

I wrote on only five days and made my daily quota on only three of them. I missed my weekly quota with only 2,001. The draft of Swordsmaster #3 is over 30,000 words.

Why Am I Making Such a Big Deal About a Series?

I feel such a fool.

As I’ve been working on Swordsmaster #2 & #3, I’ve been bemoaning the difficulties (I may have tried to not sound like I was bemoaning, but let’s face it – that’s exactly what I was doing.) I was making a big deal out of how the individual books are interrelated, about how the writing of Swordsmaster4one book was interfering with the writing of the other.

Much ado about nothing…

What is the difference between a series and a novel?

Nothing, really. When the books of a series are taken together, they are just more involved stories and subplots. The series has some main plot running through it, but each book has its own plot, which is really a subplot in relation to the series. Stories (and series) are like fractals – the longer the story, the deeper into the fractal pattern you can go.

I shouldn’t be talking like it’s a surprise that I can’t fully complete my second book until I know where the third one is headed.

I have arrived at the point where I know enough about what’s going to happen in Swordsmaster #3 that I can return to working on Swordsmaster #2 (after I draw out a rough outline of the remainder of #3, of course.)

It’s always something. Just saying…
