Writing Wednesday: A Fear of Self Promotion

Last Week’s Goals

All three blog posts went out as scheduled. I had another 4 stories return from market, and they were sent back out to the next prospective publication.

Ups and Downs: Detective Jimmy Delaney Collection #3 completed its release weekend. My next scheduled release is July 8th, and will probably be my third Herc Tom, Champion of the Empire collection. If I follow the naming convention I started with, that would make it Cats of War III – not sure if I’ll continue that way. Maybe that title, but then a topical subtitle and a sub-subtitle. We shall see.

I wrote on five days last week, and missed my daily quota on all of them. I also missed my weekly quota, with only 1,927 words of fiction. Swordsmaster #2 is now at 111,728 words.

Bill Is an Annoyingly Shy Guy

I take online surveys, and sometimes they try to do personality profiles (shorter versions than the ones I took for career classes or jobs, but very similar.) I quite often find myself stuck right in the middle between introvert and extrovert. I want to stand out from the crowd, but at the same time, I don’t want to be noticed too much. I’m a walking contradiction (name that tune…)

I have a hard time doing self-promotion. I write, and want people to read it (and hopefully even BUY it), but I have a hard time saying “HEY! YOU SHOULD READ MY STORIES!” (it really does feel like I’m yelling rudely when I try.) But if I want people to read my stories, I have to do more than just put them out there.

I’ve been involved in a writing group for a little over a year now. Other than occasionally reading one of my stories to the group, or submitting a new one for critique, I haven’t said much of anything about my hundred or so pieces out there at various retailers. This past week I finally decided to toot my own horn a little – told them about my sale to The Arcanist, my latest honorable mention with Writers of the Future, and read my Silver Honorable Mention. I had so much to share, I forgot to mention the release of my latest Detective Jimmy Delaney collection – in the middle of its release.

I didn’t realize it until later, when I was patting myself on the back for promoting myself, that I had let another marketing opportunity slip by. I suspect that it wasn’t a mere accidental oversight – somewhere in the back of my mind, I’m sure my introvert sabotaged that opportunity. Just saying…
