Meandering Monday about Songs, Movies, and My Bucket List

Do you have songs that just stick with you?

I remember a night waiting outside the cafeteria I worked in my teens, singing “My Way” while I was waiting for a ride. That’s about fifty years – that’s how far back I know that song has stuck with me. I’ve sung the song more than I’ve listened to it (it’s one of my go to, “in the shower” songs.)

I feel emotionally tied to the song – the lyrics are powerful, and the tune itself strong – I can really get into it.

Another one like that is “The Impossible Dream” from Man of La Mancha. It carries much of the same attitude / sentiment as “My Way.” I’m not really sure if it’s the message or the melody, but it almost always brings tears to my eyes (that could get awkward if I ever get to play the role – it’s at the top of my bucket list. I should probably start working on that list – being retired, I guess I should be treating this as BUCKET TIME (I almost claimed that phrase as my own and stuck a ™ on it, having never heard it used before, but I looked it up, and it’s apparently already in use in relation to autism, so I can’t have it.)

Those songs are about holding true to yourself and striving against the odds. My favorite movies (the ones that I can and have watched more than all others) have that same backbone. Invincible. A Knight’s Tale. I’m a sucker for an underdog story – watching someone strive against the odds, stick by their guns and face down the opposition helps reinforce the idea that it can be done.

And as stories tend to worm into your memories so that it FEELS like you experienced them yourself, there is a vicarious sense of accomplishment. Not a substitute for actual success, but sometimes we all need a quick fix. Just Saying…

What helps you reenergize?
