Meandering Monday about Our Crumbling Foundations and What We’re Allowed to Know

Happy Independence Day!!!

I’m going to take the opportunity to go slightly political about narratives versus news. If you’re offended – well, it’s a free country. At least that’s what I remember from social studies, but then, I’m an old guy.

In our foundational documents, a high importance was put on freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press. The government – enabled by the will of WE THE PEOPLE – is to make no laws (or regulations) restricting the free exercise of these FREEDOMS.

Mind that the word in each is OF, not FROM. I am free to say what I believe, whether it offends you or not. The government is not in place to protect anyone FROM someone else’s free speech, or their freedom to express their religious belief’s (there are seemingly obvious restrictions to this – your right to your religious beliefs does not supplant someone else’s right to life, so no human sacrifice, please.)

I’ve harped opined a lot on this blog about the setting of narrative. Rightly so – as a FICTION writer, a lot of my job is defining the “reality” of the universe my story occurs in. If the person experiencing a tale doesn’t understand the background, the story can seem at least confusing, and probably unbelievable. But what I write is not intended to be believed as TRUTH, and not intended to stay with the reader once they close the book.

George Orwell’s 1984 portrayed a world where the government controlled everything, including TRUTH. I don’t think George understood what could happen if non-government entities (such as newspapers, broadcast news, or internet and social media platforms) chose to hold to a particular narrative. Or if a society decided to enforce adherence to that dogma rather than open and honest discussion of facts.

Narrative setting in REAL LIFE is a problem. If I relied on mainstream media and various tech platforms, I would believe:

  • The Supreme Court took away a Constitutional right when they revoked Roe vs. Wade. (It was never in the Constitution. Somehow, in all this time we have ignored the other human life being extinguished in each abortion. If only Congress had chosen to codify when human life begins…)
  • All women favor abortion (You obviously never saw a March for Life.)
  • There was a DEADLY INSURRECTION on January 6th 2021 (It’s constantly referred to as deadly, but only protestor Ashli Babbitt was killed, and she by law enforcement. The term insurrection seems disingenuous for misbehavior that was really somewhere between trespassing (despite proof that many were deliberately let into the building) that lasted 3 hours (not the months that have been spent attacking the federal courthouse in Portland or various other governmental buildings – including The White House – during the MOSTLY PEACEFUL BLM & ANTIFA protests of 2020 and beyond).)
  • There was no fraud in the 2020 Presidential election (Despite video evidence to the contrary, unconstitutional rules changes, sworn affidavits of fraud, 2000 Mules, and the unlikelihood that the current occupier of The White House received 81 million legitimate votes.)
  • The January 6th Committee is a serious attempt to find truth (while refusing to allow any members who would question their narrative and presenting hearsay as truth of criminal activity.)
  • Donald Trump is the most unpopular president ever (have you seen Biden’s numbers?), was only elected because of Russia (I guess that Mueller Report exoneration can be discounted), and can never be President again (because the Democrats say so. As they’ve said for years, THE WALLS ARE CLOSING IN!!!)

In my youth I once questioned how I could know that I was getting the truth from official sources in the United States. It was pointed out that I could go to any newsstand and find myriad publications that either corroborated or challenged the official narrative – but in the United States all that information was available.

That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Whatever conflicts with the favored narrative is labeled as misinformation, if it’s even allowed to be heard at all.

It can be hard to know what’s really happening if all you’re fed is a fictional narrative. You might prefer a world where my time-travel works, but you’re in for a rude awakening if you try to live your life that way. It takes more effort to ferret out the truth, but it’s worth it to know how things are in reality. Your life and the future could depend on it.

Just Saying…
